Introduction

Antique Corner Cupboards

Corner cupboards were made to use the angle of a room that nothing else fits. The earliest use was as hanging cupboards for china, glass and small stores; floor-standing and glazed display versions followed. They became a standard piece of English domestic furniture in the eighteenth century and carried on being made in period styles into the twentieth.

The version you'll meet most often on Sellingantiques is Georgian and English, in oak or mahogany, with one or two panelled doors and frequently a bow front. Oak leads the timbers by title count, mahogany follows, and Georgian is the commonest period word of all. Dozens of near-identical Georgian oak bow front cupboards sit in the lower-middle of the range.

Roughly a sixth of listings are described as hanging or wall-mounted, and a smaller group as floor-standing, including two-part and full-height cabinets with a glazed or open top over a cupboard base. Bow-fronted and barrel-back forms make up about a sixth. Painted, japanned and chinoiserie surfaces form a small, steady slice, and Continental pieces, Dutch most often, with single Swedish, Italian, French, Danish and Spanish examples, are a small minority.

Dating is broad rather than precise. Only 279 of 1,140 listings carry a clean year; the rest are filed as Georgian or 18th Century, each a century of latitude. The dealers' date field runs from 1700 to 1960, with a Queen Anne lacquered cabinet at one end and oak and walnut cupboards of the 1920s and 1930s at the other.

What sets them apart

Range And Top End

Timber does much of the work. At the bottom sit plain oak, pine and elm carcases with no decoration. Toward the top run burr walnut marquetry, kingwood, parquetry, satinwood, yew, cherry and figured mahogany. The archive also turns up ash, fruitwood, amboyna, goncalo alves, rosewood and teak, so the middle is wider than the oak-and-mahogany majority suggests.

Scale and complexity separate the range next. Full-height, two-part and architectural cupboards, including a seven-foot Scottish oak cabinet, sit at the upper end, while small, very small and miniature examples cluster low, one of them described as an apprentice piece. Decorated surfaces follow the same direction: chinoiserie, japanning, painting and marquetry appear repeatedly in the upper half.

Two other things push a cupboard up. Pairs are scarce, twenty-one titles in the whole archive, and almost every pair sits in the upper reaches, the highest being French parquetry corner cabinets. Early date does the same, with William and Mary, Queen Anne, George I and George II pieces recurring well above the middle.

The Antique Corner Cupboards Glossary

Bow front
Door and frame curved outward in plan, written variously as bow front, bow fronted or bowfront; between them they account for over two hundred titles.
Hanging
Made to be fixed to the wall rather than stand on the floor, and the commonest form word after the timbers, at 187 titles.
Two-part or double
Made in two stages, usually a glazed or open top over a cupboard base. Thirty titles say double, and others say full height or 2 part.
Astragal glazed
A glazed door divided by slim moulded bars, turning up in Edwardian and Victorian titles.
Crossbanded
A border of contrasting veneer laid across the grain around a door or a top.
Japanned
Painted and varnished imitation of Oriental lacquer. Twenty-one titles say lacquered, and chinoiserie, European decoration in a Chinese taste, appears in forty-four.
Questions people ask

Antique Corner Cupboards: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a barrel back corner cupboard?

A deeply rounded bow, with the carcase swept like a barrel rather than simply curved across the door. The phrase turns up in a handful of titles.

It sits within the wider bow-fronted group, which covers about a sixth of the archive.

Are most of these hanging or floor-standing?

Hanging and wall-mounted cupboards run to roughly a sixth of listings, with oak hanging examples the largest single cluster among them.

Floor-standing pieces are fewer, under a tenth by title, and include two-part and full-height cabinets with a glazed or open upper stage.

Which woods were used?

Oak and mahogany between them account for two-thirds of all titles, which is why the plain Georgian oak cupboard is the shape most people picture.

The rest spread widely: elm, ash, pine, fruitwood, cherry, yew, walnut, burr yew, satinwood, amboyna, kingwood, goncalo alves, rosewood and teak all appear.

How many corner cupboards come up for sale?

About 108 are listed a year on Sellingantiques, offered by 210 different dealers over the life of the archive.

That spread means the form is stocked thinly by a great many dealers rather than being anyone's specialism.

Do Continental examples appear?

They do, but sparsely. Nineteen titles say Dutch, and single pieces run to Swedish, Danish, Italian, Spanish, French, Scandinavian, Austro-Hungarian, East German and Anglo-Indian.

One Swedish cupboard carries a painted date of 1819. The great majority of the archive is English.

Why are so many just labelled Georgian?

Because that is how dealers file them. Georgian appears in the date field 368 times and 18th Century 211 times, each covering about a hundred years.

Only 279 of the 1,140 listings give a clean year. Victorian, Edwardian and 1900s tags follow, with decade tags thin throughout.
