Pair of Charlotte Rhead Art Deco Lustre Vases

1900 - 1920
Description

Charming pair of Charlotte Rhead hand painted Art Deco vases for Burleigh Ware, dating from the 1920's.

Charlotte was one of the leading English Ceramic designers of the early 20th century and as such her designs are greatly sought after. This pair of lustre vases are not only of her design but hand painted by Charlotte herself, and signed to the base of both vases.

The pattern known a 'Fruit' depicts luscious fruits and berries, picked out in pinks, blues and oranges with the most wonderful copper lustre cherries. The vases really catch the light, with the cherries glowing like jewels. Both vases have pink lustre tops and bases.

This is an early example of her work, and the pattern in this colour palette is not as common.

Both vases stand 18cm tall and are 10cm across the widest point of the bases. They are in lovely condition, but do have the gentle surface wear to be expected and is commensurate with their age, which I have reflected in their price. This is noted as slight wear to the lustre base on one vase, and a tiny fleabite on one of the bases ( shown in the photographs ) - all of which are unnoticeable when seen as they both display beautifully.

Please don't hesitate to contact me should you like any further information or photographs.

I offer free postage throughout the UK, and am very happy to help with quotes for shipping abroad.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed during the 1920s and 1930s in Staffordshire, England, Charlotte Rhead ceramics represent a celebrated era of British Art Pottery known for hand-applied tubelining and vibrant glaze effects.

These pieces were crafted from earthenware clay, coated with slip, hand-decorated using raised tubeline outlines, and finished with metallic lustre glazes before kiln firing.

Genuine examples feature printed manufacturer backstamps such as Crown Ducal or Bursley Ware, accompanied by hand-painted pattern numbers and characteristic tubelined artist signatures or marks on the base.

Displaying a pair on a polished sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece creates balance and provides a focal point within contemporary or traditional schemes.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive pads or chemical solvents that could wear away delicate iridescent lustre glazes.
