19th century
Description

Circa 1820. An exhibition quality George IV mahogany inlaid four door breakfront linen press. The moulded cornice with various inlays including satinwood and chequered patterns, in the center a pair of doors with plum pudding mahogany panels, brass beading and string inlay. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George IV breakfront linen press is a substantial piece of 1820s storage furniture featuring a central section that projects forward from the side wings, traditionally incorporating upper cupboards above drawers for storing household linens.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers, frequently incorporating oak or pine secondary woods for drawer linings, paired with brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces from the George IV era (18201830) often display classical proportions, carved scroll feet, hand-cut dovetail joints, flame mahogany door panels, and original brass hardware.

Position the press as a focal statement piece along a primary bedroom or hallway wall, balancing its scale with contemporary soft furnishings and neutral wall paint.

Maintain a stable room humidity, dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually while avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources.
