Longcase clocks with marquetry decoration gained popularity in England during the late seventeenth century, following the introduction of the pendulum mechanism, which required a tall, narrow protective enclosure.

These clocks are typically constructed with an oak or pine carcassing, which is then veneered in walnut and embellished with intricate floral or seaweed marquetry patterns utilising contrasting woods.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the construction of the movement, the quality of the hand-cut brass dial, the ageing of the timber, and the presence of hand-cut dovetails and traditional fixings within the case.

A longcase clock serves as a strong vertical focal point and pairs well with neutral walls, allowing the intricate wood grain and inlay work to provide texture and historical contrast in a modern setting.

Maintain the clock in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and central heating vents, ensuring the timber is occasionally treated with appropriate wax and the mechanical movement is serviced by a professional horologist.
