Description

Technical Description

A rare Art Nouveau style Cranberry Cut Vase dating to between c1910 and c1935.

Cut to clear, with a notch cut rim above an Art Nouveau, cut Iris, design. Sits on a star cut base.

Superb exquisite workmanship, the swirling shape and cutting of the leaves, being seen in the Stevens and Williams Joshua Hodgetts amber vase example shown. The Iris pattern can also be seen on a number of other Stevens & Williams pieces from the same period. This particular vase is unmarked and therefore could either be by Stevens and Williams or by Royal Brierley who took them over in the 1930's.

Either way, it’s an extremely rare piece which you will have difficultly finding elsewhere.

Art Nouveau emerged in the late 19th century, drawing inspiration from natural forms such as plants, flowers, and flowing organic lines. Glassmakers during this era utilised innovative techniques like acid etching and cased layers to create dynamic, nature-inspired decorative objects.

Cranberry glass, also known as ruby glass, is produced by adding small amounts of gold chloride to molten glass. This chemical reaction creates its characteristic rich pinkish-red hue when reheated and worked by skilled artisans.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-cut facets, polished pontil marks on the base, and slight surface irregularities indicative of manual manufacture. The weight, resonance, and depth of colour also help differentiate genuine items from modern reproductions.

Placing a brightly coloured glass vessel on a neutral surface allows the rich tones and reflective qualities to stand out as a focal point. They work effectively when displayed alone as sculptural objects or utilised to introduce historical character into contemporary spaces.

Antique glass should be washed gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish soap, avoiding abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals. Because thermal shock can crack aged glass, always avoid sudden temperature changes during washing.
