Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, emerged in Britain during the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement, allowing for longer pendulums and narrower cases.

These clocks are traditionally constructed from solid timber frames veneered with decorative hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring brass dial faces, steel movements, and lead or iron weights.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the integration of the movement to the dial, the hand-engraving quality on the brass face, dovetail joinery in the case, and consistency in the timbers ageing and patina.

Position the clock as a focal point in an entrance hallway or living room, pairing its traditional dark timber tones with neutral wall colours to create a balanced contrast.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, wind the weights carefully at regular intervals, and have the movement professionally serviced every few years.
