We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large Continental court cupboard dates from the 1920s Jacobean Revival period. Fashioned from golden brown oak with a warm mid-brown timber tone, the piece stands as a substantial single section with opening cupboard doors and storage compartments. The upper section contains a central cabinet flanked by angled side panels, set beneath a projecting cornice adorned with geometric block moulding and supported by heavy turned columns at the outer corners. Deeply carved foliate panels decorate both upper and lower cabinet doors, complemented by carved friezes, thumbnail mouldings, and simple round wooden pull handles. The lower cupboard sits on block feet, framed by vertical rope-twist columns flanking the two lower doors. Measuring 157.5 cm high, 160 cm wide, and 53.5 cm deep, this substantial furnishing suits placement in a dining room, large hallway, or living space as a statement storage piece. The traditional English country house aesthetic provides functional display and concealed storage capacity for tableware, linens, or books within a robust architectural frame.

A court cupboard is a two-tiered wooden cabinet originally developed in the late 16th and 17th centuries for displaying plate and storing household linens or food. The term court derives from the French word court, meaning short, reflecting its low, accessible stature compared to taller armoires.

Traditional court cupboards were constructed primarily from solid oak, chosen for its durability and rich grain structure. Construction techniques included hand-planed joinery, mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, and deeply relief-carved decorative panels.

Authentic period court cupboards display signs of age such as uneven hand-planed surfaces, peg joinery, and natural wear around handles and bases. Revival pieces from the 19th and early 20th centuries often feature machine-sawn timber combined with traditional hand-carving techniques.

A carved oak court cupboard serves as a grounded focal point when set against neutral wall colours like off-white, sage, or muted grey. Complementing the heavy woodwork with modern ceramic vessels or simple linen textiles balances the ornate detailing.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying, warping, or fading.
