Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian Gothic Revival carved oak side cupboard comes in a dark brown finish and measures 183 cm high, 114 cm wide, 51 cm deep. The piece divides into two sections for ease of movement, comprising an upper open shelf supported by sculpted female figures and ornate carved masks, alongside a carved back panel displaying floral rosettes. The lower base section contains an upper single opening storage drawer with a central carved lion mask, above a lower single opening cupboard door decorated with geometric moulding and a diamond panel motif. The structure rests on low block feet and includes drop ring handles on the upper drawer and cupboard corners, with decorative carved friezes around the top and base mouldings. The timber shows visible grain variation and surface wear consistent with age, and the interior reveals a shelf. Placed in a home today, it functions as a practical storage unit and display cabinet in a hallway, dining room or living space.

FAQs

Victorian Revival furniture often drew inspiration from 16th and 17th-century designs, featuring deep relief wood carvings, heraldic motifs, lion masks, and architectural elements such as caryatids and turned columns. Dark stained oak was heavily favoured to recreate a historical, atmospheric aesthetic.

These cupboards were predominantly constructed from solid oak, frequently stained or dark-waxed to emulate aged timber. Construction techniques included hand-cut dovetail joints, mortise and tenon joinery, and hand-carved decorative panels.

Authentic pieces display signs of age such as uneven drawer linings, hand-sawn timber marks on the back panels, natural wood shrinkage around panel joints, and historical wear around handles and hinges.

A dark carved oak cupboard functions well as a focal point when contrasted against neutral or muted wall tones. Combining the heavy woodwork with modern lighting, glass decorative accents, or minimalist contemporary artwork creates a balanced, eclectic interior.

Dust the detailed carvings regularly using a soft-bristled brush or dry microfiber cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and maintain its original patina, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
