Pair of large late C17th /early C18th Japanese Genroku period porcelain vases and covers decorated in the Imari palette.

Impressive pair of Japanese porcelain vases decorated in the typical Imari colour palette of colbalt blue and iron-red enamels Alternating panels and vignettes of opulent chrysanthemum and stylised flower and foliage decoration and geometric designs, to the tapering ovoid baluster bodies together with gilded highlights . The shoulder lappet panels and raised neck collars of the vases with panels of corresponding complex decoration , and fitted with richly decorated domed-cover lids surmounted with gilded mythical guardian lion-dogs or Komainu. The foot-rings with typical trailing cloud design decoration .

The bodies in excellent original ,perfect condition with no damage or repairs. The lip edge of one cover with an historic amateur or ‘countryhouse’ style repair, the other cover with a firing crack to the interior. The ‘lion-dog’ finials with some rubbing and minor chips.

An important and decorative pair of Genroku era, Edo period , vases and covers from the Arita kilns in Japan .

Vases of this type can be found in some of the major European and British collections and noble houses , having been imported mainly by the Dutch East India Company or V.O.C , in the early C18th to satisfy the demand for exotic oriental porcelain from wealthy collectors.
