Two Antique Staffordshire Dog Spill Vases C1860

These two well-modelled and brightly-coloured ANTIQUE STAFFORDSHIRE SPILL VASES date from circa 1860.

Although technically not a pair as they both face the same way, they are identical models with just the young couple's clothes painted from a different palette.

They display beautifully together.

The SPILL VASES are in good condition with no restoration.

Spill vases were 19th-century ceramic vessels designed to hold rolled paper spills or wood splints used for transferring fire from a hearth to candles or pipes. Produced extensively in the Staffordshire potteries, these earthenware vessels combined functional storage with decorative figurative sculpture for fireplace display.

Staffordshire figures were typically press-moulded from earthenware clay in separate hollow sections before assembly.
