Twin Fusee Georgian Bracket Clock.

18th century
For Sale by Masons Antiques
Description

A classic mahogany bracket clock from the "age of elegance" Georgian era.

Made from beautiful flame mahogany, the arched top case has generous brass inlay and a brass surround inset panel to the lower half. To the sides are brass sound frets with gold backed material. It has brass "lion-head" carrying handles above the sound frets and stands on 4 round brass ball feet.

The 8" convex white dial has black Roman numerals and beautifully cut hands. It has a cast brass bezel with convex glass.

The 8 day, twin fusee movement strikes the hours on a bell with a lovely crisp, resonating tone. It has just been fully overhauled by our BHI registered staff and carries our usual 12mths full parts and labour guarantee. It has a London style pendulum that is lockable, and a glazed rear door.

A clock of exemplary quality as one would expect from the Georgian period.

All cards accepted.

A Georgian twin fusee bracket clock is a British spring-driven table clock produced during the Georgian period, featuring a fusee cone mechanism to maintain consistent timekeeping as the spring unwinds. The twin fusee movement operates both the timekeeping train and an striking train for hourly or quarter-hourly chimes.

These clocks typically feature cases made from solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers, often accented with brass stringing, brass foliage inlays, and cast brass feet. Dials were commonly made of painted metal or brass with painted Roman numerals, housed behind glass aperture doors.

Authentic Georgian examples exhibit hand-carved case mouldings, hand-engraved backplates on the movement, heavy cast brass components, and period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails. The fusee mechanism will feature gut line or wire cord connections winding around a grooved brass cone.

A bracket clock functions as a focal architectural accent when placed centrally on a living room mantelpiece, a hallway console table, or within a formal library bookcase. Position the piece alongside minimalist ceramic items or framed artwork to create contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics.

Keep the clock positioned in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood warping and movement drying. Mechanical movements require periodic professional overhaul and lubrication every five to seven years to ensure functional longevity.
