Italian maiolica is tin-glazed earthenware decorated with opaque glazed colours applied onto an unfired white background glaze. Emerging prominently during the Renaissance, this ceramic tradition features classical motifs, profile portraits, foliage, and biblical or historical scenes.

These vessels were hand-thrown using local earthenware or terracotta clay and fired once to create a bisque body. A white tin-based glaze was applied, after which metal-oxide pigments were hand-painted onto the absorbent surface prior to a final kiln firing.
