Antique Coromandel Single Fusee Mantel Clock with Silvered Dial

19th century
Description

Antique Coromandel Single Fusee Mantel Clock With Silvered Dial.

This lovely antique single fusee clock has a stunning coromandel case with fantastic colour and grain. The clock has a lovely shaped, stepped top which leads to a moulding joining to the square body of the case. The front of the case then has wonderful, scrolling, mother of pearl inlay to the corners of the front which set it off beautifully. The base of the case then has a further two mouldings leading to four nicely shaped brass feet.

The dial is then silvered and set out in black Roman numerals with a smaller band marking out the minutes. The dial then has two lovely shaped hands as well as a round bevelled glass set into a brass bezel. The bezel then locks when shut and is complete with key to open to the side.

The movement is then wound from the front and accessed from the back. It ticks away as it should and comes complete with pendulum and key. The movement is single fusee.

A very rare example of a single fusee clock with a case made of extinct wood. This is the only example of an coromandel single fusee mantel clock that I have ever seen! Would make a fantastic addition to any home or collection.

It measures approximately:

- 10” / 25.5cm Tall.

- 9” / 23cm Wide.

- 6.75” / 17cm Deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fusee mantel clock is a spring-driven clock incorporating a cone-shaped pulley system designed to equalise the torque produced by the mainspring as it unwinds, maintaining consistent accuracy throughout its winding cycle.

Nineteenth-century fusee clocks commonly featured cases made from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or exotic coromandel, paired with cast brass bezels, silvered brass dials, and mother-of-pearl or brass inlays.

Authentic nineteenth-century fusee clocks can be identified by a single winding hole on the dial face, heavy cast brass plates inside the movement, hand-engraved silvered dials, and precise joinery on the veneered wooden housing.

Place the clock as a focal point on a fireplace mantel, sideboard, or executive desk, balancing its rich timber tone alongside contemporary glass ceramics or framed artwork.

Keep the wooden case away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent veneer cracking, dust the surface with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply beeswax sparingly to protect the timber finish.
