FAQs

Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export ceramic originating from the Arita area in Hizen province. Named after the port of Imari from which it was shipped, it is characterized by its signature palette of underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red and gilt detailing.

Traditional Imari ware is crafted from high-fired kaolin porcelain clay. The process involves an initial underglaze application of cobalt oxide blue before firing, followed by overglaze enamel painting in iron-red and occasionally metallic gold gilding during a second firing.

Authentic pieces generally display minor surface irregularities in the porcelain body, hand-painted brushwork rather than transfer prints, and subtle wear to overglaze enamels or gilding. Unglazed foot rims often show natural oxidisation or small imperfections from kiln firing.

A lidded Imari vase functions well as a focal point on a fireplace mantel, sideboard top, or bookshelf. Its vivid palette of navy and iron-red contrasts effectively against neutral walls, dark wood furniture, or modern minimalist joinery.
