19thc Mahogany Fusee Wall Clock with Bracket Supports

19th century
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

A most appealing Mahogany wall clock with fusee movement. This clock is in nice tidy original condition, the wood is clean and tidy with good colour, the painted face does have some signs of wear owing to its age but nothing serious and it is ticking away merrily. It has a brass bezel which seem all original and covers the fairly rare 10inch dial, it has a small door in the base to start the pendulum. The side door to view the movement opens as it should and has the Camerer Cuss and co details. Height of clock top to platform is 48cms with a further 17.5cms for the bracket.

They are quite a well known company based in London with exhibition attendance at a number of important venues.

A clock not going to be seen very often at a truly sensible price.

Limited Editions has dated this Mahogany Fusee Wall Clock to the 19th Century.

This Victorian 19th-century wall clock originates from a gentleman's library setting. Formed from mahogany, glass, and brass, the piece displays a warm brown finish. A circular dial with black Roman numerals sits inside a brass bezel, while the woodwork incorporates carved spandrels, scroll brackets, and moulded shelf supports. The painted face shows visible signs of age-related wear, and the timber retains a clean, tidy appearance. The clock measures 48 cm high, 67.5 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. Positioned on a narrow wall space, this working fusee movement timepiece suits study rooms, hallways, or living spaces. The design combines wall-hanging clock elements with a supportive wooden bracket structure underneath. Buyers find it functions as both a practical timekeeping instrument and a period decorative focal point for traditional interiors.

A fusee clock utilises a cone-shaped pulley and chain system designed to equalise the force exerted by the mainspring as it unwinds. Popular during the 18th and 19th centuries in Britain, this movement ensured consistent timekeeping accuracy for mechanical timepieces.

Keep the clock in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources, wind the mechanism regularly using the correct winding key, and arrange professional horological servicing every five to seven years.

Position the clock on a narrow wall space or above a sideboard to serve as a focal anchor, pairing its wood tones with neutral plaster backgrounds or dark academia colour palettes.

Authentic examples feature heavy cast-brass bezels, hand-painted dials displaying Roman numerals, and a distinctive gut string or steel wire chain wound around a conical fusee drum inside the movement.

These timepieces were typically constructed with solid mahogany or walnut cases, brass gear movements, steel arbors, and painted iron or brass dials enclosed behind glass bezels.
