Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A grandmother clock is a floor-standing, pendulum-driven timepiece that is smaller in scale than a traditional grandfather clock, typically measuring under six feet in height. Emerging in the late nineteenth century, these clocks were designed with slimmer proportions and shorter cases to fit into compact domestic spaces while retaining chiming mechanisms.

Victorian grandmother clocks were predominantly crafted using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut for the outer case. Internal movements were constructed from brass plates and steel gears, often featuring weight-driven movements and brass or silvered brass dials with etched spandrels.

Authentic nineteenth-century floor clocks feature hand-assembled mechanical movements, hand-finished joinery such as dovetail joints, and maker stamps or plaques on the dial or movement plates. Look for natural patination on the timber, brass weights suspended by gut cord or chain, and period-correct silvered or brass dials.

A traditional floor clock serves as a focal architectural point when placed in an entry foyer, hallway alcove, or stair landing. Pairing rich timber tones alongside neutral modern wall paint and contemporary art creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

To preserve a mechanical floor clock, ensure the case sits completely level on a stable surface to allow unimpeded pendulum movement. The movement should be oiled by a professional horologist every three to five years, and the timber case should be kept away from direct heat sources and dusted regularly with a soft cloth.
