Georgian Anglo Engraved & Cut Glass Rummer C1820

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Technical Description

An exceptional early 19th-century Anglo-Irish cut and engraved glass rummer, dating to c1820 and probably originating from Cork, Ireland.

It has a large bucket bowl, beautifully decorated around the upper section with a broad band of alternating vesica-shaped panels filled with fine diamond cutting and diamond-shaped panels containing engraved star motifs, interspersed with small polished ovals.

Below, a band of vertical panel cutting extends around the lower section of the bowl, terminating above a substantial stepped foot.

A particularly fine example of early 19th-century Anglo-Irish glassmaking, combining intricate geometric decoration with the substantial proportions and quality of cutting associated with the period.

We have also included it in a group picture of other Anglo Irish glases from the period.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Polished pontil mark beneath the base: typical hand finish of the era.
Wheel-cut diamond vesicas and engraved stars: Regency geometric decoration.
Stepped circular foot: heavy base form favoured in the 1820s.
Fine wear and scratching under the foot rim: honest age from handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

A rummer is a short-stemmed drinking vessel featuring a large bowl, widely produced in Britain from the late 18th through the 19th century for serving spirits, toddy, or ale.

Georgian rummers were typically hand-blown using lead glass, also known as flint glass, which is characterised by its weight, high refractive clarity, and clear ring when tapped.

Authentic Georgian pieces often feature subtle hand-blown irregularities, a polished or raw pontil mark beneath the foot, hand-executed wheel engraving, and natural wear patterns on the base.

An antique glass rummer can be styled on a sideboard, integrated into a drinks cabinet arrangement, or placed on a open shelf alongside historical ceramics.

Wash antique glassware by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish soap, avoiding dishwashers and sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock or clouding.
