Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 17th century, the mule chest represented a transitional stage in English furniture evolution, bridging the gap between a simple lift-top coffer and a dedicated chest of drawers. The addition of a bottom drawer beneath the main trunk compartment allowed easier access to smaller textiles such as slippers or linens.

Furniture from this period was primarily crafted from solid English oak using joined mortise and tenon construction held together with wooden pegs. Carvings were executed directly into the timber frame and panels using hand chisels and gouges.

Authentic period pieces display hand-hewn oak boards, irregular iron hardware, hand-cut joinery with protruding wooden dowels, and natural surface wear consistent with age. Relief carving patterns often reflect regional motifs specific to local woodworking traditions.

A carved oak coffer or mule chest serves as a functional focal point when placed in an entrance hallway, at the foot of a bed, or in a living area. Its rich wood tones provide texture and historic contrast against neutral walls and modern textiles.

Clean surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically to maintain timber moisture. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent splitting or joint movement.
