19th Century Victorian Engraved Wine Carafe C1850

19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A very fine Victorian glass wine carafe dating to c1850.

It features a wide pouring rim above a thick applied neck collar. The shoulders are finely engraved with an unusual continuous band of single-stemmed flower heads set within an elegant arched design.

The lower body has bold petal moulding, creating a particularly attractive optical effect, and the base has a polished pontil.

By the middle of the 19th century, wine carafes and decanters had become an important part of the Victorian dining table. Wine was commonly transferred from the bottle before being brought to the table, and glassmakers produced an enormous variety of forms, from relatively simple everyday carafes to highly cut and engraved examples. The combination of moulded decoration and delicate wheel engraving seen here is very typical of the Victorian desire to combine function with decorative craftsmanship.

A very elegant and unusual example at a practical size, holding approximately three quarters of a bottle of wine.

This Victorian wine carafe dates to the mid-nineteenth century and originates from England, representing the style of Queen Victoria's reign. Made from clear lead crystal glass, the vessel has a bulbous silhouette measuring 16 cm in height and 12 cm in diameter. It comprises a wide flared rim above a thick applied neck ring, a shoulder decorated with an engraved foliate band of single-stemmed flower heads inside arches, and a lower body featuring bold cut panel arches with petal moulding. A polished pontil sits at the base. In a modern home, this piece serves as a functional serving vessel on a sideboard top or dining table, holding approximately three quarters of a bottle of wine. It brings period charm to everyday dining arrangements or decorative displays in a reception room. The clear material and reflective optical effect of the lower moulding catch the ambient light, while the combination of wheel engraving and glass-cutting showcases the decorative techniques of Victorian glassware production.

Mid-19th century Victorian wine carafes were designed for table service of wine or water, featuring flared rims, bulbous bodies, and decorative surface ornamentation such as copper-wheel engraving or panel cutting.

These items were typically hand-blown from lead glass. Artisans added applied neck rings for grip and executed surface decoration using lapidary panel cutting and wheel engraving.

Authentic pieces usually display a ground and polished pontil mark on the base, slight variations in hand-engraved patterns, a distinct weight characteristic of lead crystal, and subtle wear marks on the bottom rim.

A Victorian carafe can be displayed on a dining room sideboard, arranged on a home bar cart alongside modern glassware, or positioned as a decorative vessel on a dining table.

Antique glassware should be washed by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, then dried immediately with a soft lint-free cloth. Dishwashers and extreme temperature changes should be avoided to prevent thermal shock and clouding.
