Victorian Bristol Blue Glass Serving Bottle C1860

19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

An excellent mid 19th century Bristol Blue glass wine serving bottle dating to c1860.

It has a tall cylindrical body with gently sloping shoulders rising to a long elegant neck and applied ring around the rim. The rich cobalt blue glass is particularly striking, and the base has a polished pontil.

Deep blue glass had been fashionable in Britain since the 18th century and continued to be produced throughout the Victorian period. The intense colour was traditionally achieved using cobalt, producing the rich blue which became popularly associated with Bristol glass, although the term Bristol Blue is now commonly used to describe the colour and does not necessarily establish Bristol manufacture.

The bottle holds approximately one full modern bottle of wine, making it a superb serving bottle or open decanter for the dinner table...or simply a striking decorative piece in its own right.

This Victorian Bristol Blue glass wine serving bottle dates to c1860. The piece has a tall cylindrical body, gently sloping shoulders, a long tapered neck, a double-collared rim, and a pushed-in pontil base. The cobalt glass exhibits a rich, deep blue colour with a smooth finish and clear interior, showing no chips, cracks, or restoration. Measuring 26 cm in height with an 8 cm diameter, the bottle holds approximately one full modern bottle of wine. In a contemporary home, this serving bottle functions as an open decanter for the dinner table or sits on a sideboard top as a decorative piece. The construction is hand-blown glass originating from England during the period of Queen Victoria. The vessel weighs 329 grams and pairs traditional deep blue tableware with classic Victorian style.

Bristol blue glass originated in Bristol, England, during the late 18th century when cobalt oxide was imported from Saxony to produce deep blue glassware. The style gained popularity throughout the Georgian and Victorian eras, primarily produced for dining room vessels such as decanters, carafes, and condiment bottles.

Traditional cobalt glass was created by adding cobalt oxide (smalt) to molten glass batch mixtures, often featuring soda-lime or flint glass compositions. The mixture was hand-blown into shaped moulds or free-blown before being trimmed and finished with hand-worked collars.

Authentic 19th-century pieces typically feature a rough or smoothed pontil mark on the base, minor air bubbles within the glass matrix, and hand-finished rim profiles. The weight and deep saturation of the cobalt oxide colouring also distinguish genuine period pieces from modern reproductions.

Coloured glass bottles are effectively displayed on window sills, open shelving, or sideboards where natural light can pass through the vessel. Grouping pieces of varying heights or pairing them with complementary glassware creates a layered decorative display.

Clean hand-blown glass using lukewarm water and mild dish detergent, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive sponges. Hand dry with a soft lint-free cloth, and avoid extreme temperature fluctuations that could thermal-shock the material.
