Victorian Bristol Blue Finger Bowl C1850

19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A fine mid 19th century Victorian glass finger bowl in a rich Bristol Blue colour, dating to c1850.

It has a simple rounded form with thick walls and a particularly good weight in the hand. The glass has that lovely oily appearance and feel often associated with earlier Bristol Blue glass, and the base has a polished pontil.

Finger bowls formed part of the formal Victorian dining table and were generally brought to the table with the dessert course, containing water in which diners could rinse their fingertips. Their use became particularly associated with increasingly elaborate dining etiquette during the 19th century.

Today they can be used for almost anything from a simple decorative piece to a small serving bowl or a container for tea lights.

Either way it is just as useful today as it was almost 200 years ago.

This Victorian glass finger bowl dates to c1850. The piece takes a hand-blown rounded cylindrical form in a deep cobalt blue tint with thick walls, a polished rim, and a flat base showing a polished pontil. The surface has an oily appearance and the object has a substantial weight in the hand with no visible chips, cracks, or restoration. Measuring 9 cm in height and 11.2 cm in diameter, this tableware item weighs 375 grams. Historically placed on the formal dining table during the dessert course with water for rinsing fingertips, this object serves a variety of purposes in a modern home. Placed on a sideboard top, it functions effectively as a decorative piece, a small serving bowl, or a container for tea lights within an English country house setting.

Finger bowls were introduced to formal European dining etiquette during the 18th and 19th centuries, designed to be filled with water for rinsing fingers between courses. Coloured glass versions, particularly in deep cobalt blue, became widely popular during the Victorian era as decorative elements for formal table settings.

Bristol blue glass was crafted by adding cobalt oxide to molten glass, producing an intense blue shade. These items were typically hand-blown using traditional glassblowing irons and finished with polished rims and snapped or ground pontil bases.

Authentic 19th-century examples usually exhibit slight variations in thickness and minor air bubbles trapped in the matrix. They feature a ground or polished pontil scar on the underside and demonstrate natural wear on the base consistent with age.

A vibrant cobalt glass bowl can be placed on a sideboard, console table, or open bookshelf to catch natural light. It also functions as an elegant vessel for holding small jewellery or decorative items on a dressing table.

Hand wash antique glassware in lukewarm water using a mild liquid detergent and a soft cloth. Avoid dishwashers, abrasive pads, and extreme thermal shocks from hot water to prevent cracking or surface damage.
