Each cabinet has a rectangular top, a single glazed door framed with beading, and flat pilasters flanked with gilt metal mounts. Further details include an inlaid frieze centered with a hand-painted Sevres-style porcelain plaque in a gilded frame, an enclosed inlaid plinth, and four squat turned bun feet. Measuring 109 cm high, 77 cm wide, and 34 cm deep, these pier cabinets suit a gentleman's library, a study, or a formal living room as display storage for books or decorative items.

FAQs

Pier cabinets originated in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, designed to sit between large windows against structural wall piers. During the Victorian era, these cabinets featured burr walnut veneers, glass doors for displaying items, and decorative metal mounts influenced by French furniture styles.

Victorian cabinets were constructed using solid timber frameworks finished with burr walnut or mahogany veneers. Decorative elements incorporated gilt-bronze or ormolu mounts, inlaid porcelain plaques, glass door panels, and ebonised wood mouldings.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-cut joinery, original metal fittings with natural oxidisation, and hand-sawed veneers. Examination of the backboards, interior lining, and plinth construction provides further evidence of period manufacture.

Placing a pair of low glazed cabinets symmetrically alongside a fireplace or doorway creates balanced proportion. They can be used to store books or display ceramics, integrating historical woodwork into contemporary living spaces.

Cabinets should be positioned away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer movement or fading. Regular dusting with a soft dry cloth and an occasional light application of beeswax polish will protect the wood surface.
