This 18th century Delftware earthenware vase exhibits a tin-glazed white finish hand-painted with cobalt blue Chinoiserie decoration. The form comprises an octagonal body with a flat foot rim, a slightly concave spreading lower section, a broad rounded shoulder, a waisted neck, and a tapering rim. The visual design includes floral and scrollwork banding, rising flowers and petals, flower-filled reserves in the panels, two ladies in a garden, and exotic birds flying overhead and perching among flowers. The piece measures 31 cm in height and 18.5 cm in diameter. Placement suits a sideboard top within an English country house setting, serving as a decorative accent for living spaces, dining rooms, or hallways. The construction displays distinct faceted panels and contrasting blue patterns against a pale glazed backdrop.

Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced predominantly in the Netherlands and Great Britain during the 17th and 18th centuries. It emerged as an accessible alternative to imported Asian porcelain, replicating Chinese blue-and-white decorative motifs using local clay techniques.

Delftware was formed from earthenware clay, fired, and coated with an opaque white tin-based glaze. Artisans hand-painted decorations onto the unfired glaze using metallic oxidesprimarily cobalt oxide for bluebefore a final firing fused the glaze and pigments together.

Authentic 18th-century pieces usually exhibit soft earthenware bodies with small chips revealing reddish or buff-coloured clay beneath the white glaze. Hand-painted brushwork shows slight variations, glaze crazing is common, and the underside often features unglazed rim areas or makers marks typical of historical kilns.

A classic blue and white ceramic vessel provides contrast when placed alongside natural timber, contemporary neutral stonework, or dark painted surfaces. Position it as a focal point on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within open shelving displays.

Clean tin-glazed earthenware gently using a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with lukewarm water and mild soap. Avoid soaking the piece or applying chemical detergents, as moisture can penetrate glazed cracks and degrade the porous earthenware body beneath.
