Fine Pair of Early 19th Century Peacock Blue Wine Glasses C1810

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A very fine pair of early 19th century Peacock Blue wine glasses, dating to c1810.

They have cup bowls set above short hollow open stems, each decorated with an applied shoulder collar and a band of raspberry prunts. They stand on high conical feet with extensive hand-applied spiral coil trailing.

Historical Context

Peacock Blue is a distinctive blue-green colour particularly associated with English glassmaking during the Napoleonic period.

During the late 18th century, British glassmakers relied heavily on cobalt imported from Saxony in Germany to produce the rich, deep blue glass commonly known as Bristol Blue.

However, the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815), and particularly the Continental Blockade introduced in 1806, severely disrupted the supply of cobalt to Britain.

This shortage encouraged glassmakers to explore alternative colouring methods and is believed to have contributed to the increased use of lighter blue-green shades, including Peacock Blue, during the early 19th century.

These are rare glasses and wonderful examples from the period...the last example we had in this form and colour was in 2020.

This pair of early 19th-century Georgian Regency wine glasses dates to c1810 and originates from England during the period of King George III. Formed from peacock blue glass, the vessels each present a globular cup bowl set above a short hollow open stem decorated with an applied shoulder collar and a band of raspberry prunts, rising from a broad ribbed conical base featuring extensive hand-applied spiral coil trailing. The items stand 11.5 cm high, with a rim diameter of 5.6 cm and a foot diameter of 6.8 cm, weighing 342 grams for the pair in total with excellent condition showing no chips, cracks, or restoration. Displayed on a sideboard top, the wine glasses bring historical Regency character to a dining room setting or living space.

Roemer glasses originated in Northern Europe during the 17th century and evolved through the Georgian and Regency periods. Characterised by rounded bowls and textured stems, coloured variations such as peacock blue became popular table accessories in the early 19th century.

These goblets were hand-blown using lead or soda glass infused with metallic oxides to achieve vibrant hues like peacock blue. Stems were typically decorated with applied glass prunts or trailed glass threading, anchored by a conical base.

Authentic pieces exhibit a rough or ground snap-off pontil mark on the underside of the base, subtle variations in glass thickness, minute air bubbles known as seeds, and natural surface wear around the rim and bottom edge.

Coloured glass stemware can be displayed on open kitchen shelving, a dining sideboard, or a bar cart where natural light highlights the vivid tones. Combining vibrant antique glass with neutral modern ceramic dinnerware creates an engaging textural contrast.

Wash hand-blown glass individually by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding dishwashers completely. Dry immediately with a lint-free microfibre cloth to prevent water spots and protect against thermal shock.
