Asprey, London - Art Deco Silver Plated Cocktail Tray C.1930

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A stylish English cocktail or drinks tray made by the iconic luxury silversmith, Asprey of London.

The oval tray has two flared handles with a simple decorative Art Deco detail. The underside of the tray is fully marked with a combination of "A & Co." inside a cartouche paired with "ASPREY LONDON" which signifies the piece was manufactured or commissioned during the era when Asprey operated heavily under their registered corporate structure (Asprey & Co. Ltd).

The history of Asprey is the story of one of Britain’s oldest and most prestigious luxury houses. Spanning over 240 years, the company transformed from a modest 18th-century silk workshop into a world-famous purveyor of fine jewelry, silver, leather goods, and bespoke items.

The "Golden Age" of Entertaining: The 1920s and 1930s (when this tray was manufactured) marked a spectacular era for the brand. Embracing the energetic, geometric Art Deco movement, Asprey became the definitive destination for high-end barware. They designed legendary luxury cocktail shakers, travel clocks, cigarette cases, and entertaining trays tailored for the interwar cocktail hour craze.

Excellent condition just back from our silversmith's workshop where it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory.

This Art Deco cocktail tray comes from the 1930 period and originates from England, produced by the luxury maker Asprey of London. Made from silver plated metal with a polished silver surface, the oval piece has a raised rim and two flared, angular geometric side handles with simple linear detail, displaying a bright reflective finish from recent professional cleaning. The item measures 5.1 cm high, 38.1 cm wide, and 27.9 cm deep overall. Positioned on a sideboard top, the tray serves as functional barware for home entertaining during drinks service. The underside bears full manufacturer markings including "ASPREY LONDON" and "A & Co." inside a cartouche, confirming its heritage as a fine example of interwar British silver work.

Art Deco barware from the 1930s is characterised by clean geometric lines, streamlined forms, and functional symmetry, reflecting the modern aesthetic of the era.

These trays typically feature a base metal core, such as nickel silver or brass, electroplated with a layer of pure silver to achieve a smooth, bright finish.

Authentic pieces often bear makers marks, stamps indicating EPNS or manufacturer initials, alongside period-specific geometric handles or stepped rims.

Place the tray on a sideboard or bar cart topped with modern glassware, decanters, or decorative accessories to create an organized display.

Clean gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive pads or harsh chemicals that could wear down the silver plating.
