Early 20th Century Smith 8-Day Bakelite Railway Wall Clock, Circa 1920

1900 - 1920
Description

An early 20th century English circular wall clock by Smiths, circa 1920, housed in a dark brown Bakelite case with a hinged glazed bezel.

The cream dial features bold black Roman numerals, a railway-style minute track and original black hands, with the maker's name, Smith, and '8 Day' displayed beneath the fast and slow regulator.

The clock has an eight-day winding movement, with a winding aperture positioned below the centre of the dial.

The dial displays considerable age-related discolouration and spotting, adding to its character, whilst the Bakelite case retains its rich dark brown finish. The reverse has a wooden movement housing and original-style wall hanging bracket, with evidence of age and previous use.

An early twentieth-century English industrial-style circular wall clock by Smiths, dating from circa 1920, is housed within a dark brown Bakelite case featuring a hinged glazed bezel. The cream dial displays bold black Roman numerals, a railway-style minute track, original black spade hands, and the maker's name alongside an eight-day movement indicator positioned beneath the fast and slow regulator. A winding aperture sits below the centre of the dial, which shows considerable age-related discolouration and brown spotting across its surface. The dark brown Bakelite body exhibits a rich finish, and the reverse incorporates a wooden movement housing with a hanging bracket showing evidence of previous use. This timepiece measures 37 cm wide with a 30 cm dial. It functions well in a kitchen, study, office, or along a narrow wall space in a modern home.

A Bakelite railway wall clock is a timepiece manufactured during the early to mid-twentieth century, encased in Bakelite plastic, historically utilised across train stations, signal boxes, and transport offices.

Clocks from this era were typically constructed using molded Bakelite or solid timber cases, glass bezels protecting the dial, brass mechanical gears, and printed paper or metal dials.

Authentic Bakelite exhibits a heavy density, a smooth non-glossy molded finish, a lack of visible mold seams, and a characteristic dark brown or black colouration.

Mounting an industrial wall clock against a plain plaster or exposed brick wall provides a clean focal point that bridges historical utility with modern minimalism.

The Bakelite exterior should be dusted with a soft microfibre cloth and kept free from liquid cleansers, while the internal mechanical movement requires regular professional lubrication.
