Antique Charles II West Yorkshire Inlaid Oak Coffer C.1680

17th century
Description

A late 17th century oak coffer, the solid thumb-moulded two-plank lid opening to an intact interior fitted with original lidded till box, set over a frieze inlaid with a contrasting parquetry chevron band of bog oak and holly, above three panels incised with geometric knotwork and lattice designs within channelled framing.

The pairing of a flush bog oak and holly chevron frieze with flat-incised geometric knotwork is a recognised hallmark of the West Yorkshire joined oak tradition. This distinctive decorative vocabulary reflects a high-status regional commission, of the type produced to furnish the substantial stone houses of prosperous West Riding yeoman clothiers during the late seventeenth century.

Retaining its period wrought-iron lock and lobed escutcheon, complete with a functioning period hand-forged iron key.

Very good antique condition, displaying a rich patina with honest surface wear consistent with age. The lid retains an early linen canvas reinforcement strip along the underside seam, with typical damp wear and traces of long-inactive historic worm to the rear feet. Structurally solid throughout, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1680.

This Charles II West Yorkshire coffer originates from the 17th century, constructed from dark brown oak, bog oak, fruitwood, and iron. The exterior displays a thumb-moulded two-plank lid, a parquetry chevron inlaid frieze, three carved geometric front panels, stile legs, and a period wrought-iron lock with a lobed escutcheon. It measures 67.5 cm high, 127 cm wide, and 57.5 cm deep. Practical for everyday use, this piece provides functional storage within traditional or contemporary living spaces, functioning well as a blanket chest at the foot of a bed or as a statement storage box in a hallway or living room. The dark timber finish integrates easily into diverse interior schemes while offering substantial interior capacity.

A Charles II oak coffer is a wooden storage chest dating from the late 17th century, typically constructed using mortise and tenon joinery with decorative carving or timber inlay.

These coffers were primarily built from solid English oak, often incorporating contrasting timber inlays such as bog oak or fruitwood, and fitted with iron lock plates and hinges.

Authentic period coffers feature hand-pegged joinery, hand-planed timber surfaces, historical wear patterns on the base and lid, and period-appropriate ironwork.

An oak coffer works well positioned in an entryway, placed at the foot of a bed, or used as a central coffee table alongside contemporary textiles and neutral tones.

Clean the surface regularly with a dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the chest away from direct heat sources and extreme moisture.
