This Georgian grandfather clock from the 18th century operates on a thirty-hour movement housed within an oak case of warm brown timber. The tall wooden case stands 194 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, incorporating a long door fitted with a brass escutcheon and keyhole. At the top, a glazed square hood frames a brass dial measuring 28 cm square, decorated with ornate corner spandrels and traditional clock hands. The upper section displays carved moulding details along the frieze, complemented by visible grain patterns across the wooden panels. Suitable for placement in a hallway, living room, or study, this traditional timepiece brings a classic English country house aesthetic to domestic interiors. The vertical proportions allow the clock to stand neatly against a wall while maintaining a commanding presence in the room. The clean lines of the trunk and the contrasting metallic face provide functional decor for daily domestic use.

A 30-hour longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, features a pendulum-driven movement that requires winding once every twenty-four to thirty hours. Popularised in the late 17th and 18th centuries, these clocks typically operate using a single weight on a continuous chain drive.

Georgian longcase clock cases were predominantly constructed from oak, walnut, or mahogany timber. The clock faces were crafted from brass with cast spandrels or painted iron plates, housing steel and brass movement components.

Authentic brass dial longcase clocks feature cast brass spandrels attached to the corners of the dial plate, hand-engraved chapter rings, and hand-worked steel hands. Examining the movement for hand-cut gear teeth and observing natural timber oxidisation inside the case helps confirm age.

A longcase clock functions as a focal architectural piece when positioned in an entryway, hallway, or dining area. Placing dark timber cases against light, neutral wall tones creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern design.

Position the clock away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage and dial discolouration. Ensure the case is completely level on the floor, and have the internal mechanism cleaned and lubricated by a qualified horologist every five to seven years.
