Description

A large late19th.Century high relief carved walnut Spanish Vargueno cabinet. The rectangular shaped top having a wonderful carved panel surrounded by a foliate carved frame and retaining the original lock plate with working lock and keys. The fall opens to reveal 2 banks of 3 drawers all with carved fronts brass pulls and shaped frieze below. The sides again with high relief carving and iron carrying handles. The base section having a turned and carved balustrade flanked by spiral turned columns joining sledge feet with carved head decoration to the front. The rectangular top has a carved panel inside a foliate frame with a brass lock plate, working lock, and keys, alongside side iron carrying handles and high relief carved sides. The fall-front opens to reveal two banks of three drawers with carved fronts and brass pulls, positioned above a shaped frieze. The base has a turned balustrade flanked by spiral-turned columns, an arcaded stretcher, and sledge feet featuring carved head decoration and shell carvings. The cabinet stands 156 cm high, 109 cm wide, and 53 cm deep. Suitable for a gentleman's library or study, this piece functions as a desk and writing cabinet, providing a dedicated writing surface when the fall-front opens.
