This mid seventeenth century Jacobean two part chest comprises a dark brown combination of oak, ebony and sycamore timbers. The rectangular piece contains four drawers arranged over two tiers, each fronted with deep geometric recessed panels and contrasting inlaid geometric panels. Applied split spindles decorate the upright framing stiles and the central vertical dividers, while ornate brass drop handles accessorise the upper drawer fronts. Additional period details include applied mitred mouldings, bun feet, and an original key operating a central upper lock plate. It measures 102 cm wide, 95 cm high, and 54 cm deep. Practical storage capacity makes the chest suitable for organising clothes in a bedroom or serving as an accent furnishing in a hallway or gentleman's library. The substantial timber construction suits traditional interior schemes, anchoring a room with period character and architectural detail. Routine household items store easily within the deep drawers, combining historic authenticity with everyday domestic utility in contemporary spaces.

Jacobean furniture from the mid-17th century is characterised by sturdy oak construction, geometric moulded panels, and applied turned mouldings or split spindles. Cabinets and chests were frequently built in two sections to facilitate easier transport.

These chests were predominantly crafted from native English oak, utilizing joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. Decorative elements often incorporated contrasting inlays like ebony, sycamore, or fruitwood alongside cast brass drop handles.

Authentic period chests typically feature hand-sawn timbers, original peg joinery, thick oak drawer linings, and evidence of historical hand tools. Look for geometric recessed panels, split-spindle mouldings, and genuine two-section construction.

A Jacobean oak chest creates visual weight when placed in a contemporary space with neutral walls and clean-lined upholstery. Top the surface with simple ceramic vessels or subtle brass lighting to complement the geometric woodwork.

Maintain historic oak by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent timber movement.
