Late 17th Century Carved Oak Chest of Drawers

17th century
Description

A fine late 17th-century English oak chest of drawers of excellent proportions and untouched character circa 1680-1690

This handsome piece stands on its original bun feet and retains a rich, deep original colour that only comes from centuries of careful use and natural patination. The oak is of high quality throughout, with all timbers original, including the back boards and the top. The sides are framed with continuous bobbin (or bead) turnings that run the full height of the carcass — a distinctive and attractive period detail.

The façade is arranged in the classic late-17th-century manner of three tiers of two drawers, each drawer front boldly moulded with geometric raised panels. The drawers run smoothly and are fitted with brass pear-drop handles and matching keyhole escutcheons.

Condition is particularly appealing for a piece of this age: the chest has never been “messed about with.” There are no later alterations or aggressive restorations to the timber . The surface remains honest and the colour deep and even.

Dimensions

Height 95 cm

Width 96.5 cm

Depth 54 cm

A rare survival from Stuart English domestic furniture that combines original integrity, strong architectural presence, and the warm, dark oak colour so highly sought after by collectors and interior designers.

Ready for its new home .

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Furniture from the late 17th century is characterised by architectural influences, geometric drawer mouldings, applied spindle turnings, and solid oak joinery. Chests typically features deep drawers operating on side grooves rather than modern bottom runners.

Craftsmen primarily utilised native English oak, joined with hand-cut mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden pegs. Drawer fronts were decorated with moulded panels, complemented by brass teardrop handles and brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, irregular peg placement, side-runner drawer construction, and genuine oxidisation around brass fittings. The drawer linings often show hand-planed oak or pine boards with heavy hand-forged nails.

A period oak chest works well as a focal piece in a contemporary hallway or bedroom, contrasted against minimalist neutral walls. Placing contemporary ceramics or a minimalist table lamp on top creates an effective balance between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and central heating radiators to prevent cracking or shrinkage. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the protective patina, and dust regularly with a soft dry cloth.
