17th Century Charles II Oak Geometric Chest of Drawers, C1680

17th century
Description

Charming 17th-Century Charles II Jacobean Geometric Chest of Drawers with Superb Patina

A wonderfully characterful late 17th-century Charles II Jacobean oak geometric chest of drawers, boasting exceptional colour, depth and patina.

This finely crafted piece features a rectangular planked top with moulded edge, above two short and three long graduated, oak lined drawers, all enriched with crisp geometric moulding. The drawers retain their original brass drop handles, escutcheons and locks, adding both visual interest and great authenticity. Raised on its original square stile feet, with original planked back and panelled sides, this chest offers a completely honest, untouched feel that is increasingly hard to find. The rich, warm colour and beautifully matured surface bear the hallmark of over three centuries of careful use and polishing.

Made in England circa 1680, this is a highly decorative and practical piece of early oak furniture that would sit equally well in a period room or as a striking contrast in a more contemporary interior, a true collector’s item with real presence and charm.

This seventeenth-century Charles II chest of drawers dates from circa 1680. It is constructed from dark brown oak with brass hardware, displaying a rectangular planked top with a moulded edge above two short drawers and three long graduated drawers. The front features crisp mitred geometric mouldings, split mouldings, original brass teardrop drop handles, brass escutcheons, and locks. The structure stands on original square stile feet with an original planked back and panelled sides, exhibiting a matured polished surface and visible age patination. The chest measures 86 cm high, 97.5 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. In a modern interior, this item functions as a practical storage unit in a bedroom, hallway, or living room, sitting suitably in a period interior or providing contrast in a contemporary setting. The drawers are oak-lined and graduate in depth from top to bottom. The timber displays natural grain variations and signs of long-term use across the panels and surfaces. The brass teardrop handles hang vertically from circular backplates on each drawer front, while circular keyhole escutcheons decorate the centre of the lower drawers.

Charles II furniture, originating from the Restoration era (16601685), is characterises by a transition from utility to decorative complexity. Pieces frequently feature geometric mitred mouldings, turned split spindles, elevated construction techniques, and brass drop handles.

Seventeenth-century English furniture primarily utilised solid oak, joined with mortise and tenon construction secured by wooden dowels or pegs. Drawers were typically side-hung on wooden runners and framed with thick pine or oak drawer linings.

Authentic 17th-century chests exhibit hand-sawn wood marks, irregular drawer construction, wooden peg joinery, and side-hung drawer grooves. Wear should align naturally with age, showing deep patination and oxidisation on raw wood surfaces inside and behind the unit.

An early oak chest serves as a grounded focal point when balanced against neutral plaster walls and minimalist lighting. Accentuate the warm wood tones by pairing it with modern ceramics or contemporary artwork to create a curated contrast between historic depth and modern design.

Maintain historical oak by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
