17th Century Charles II Oak Chest of Drawers

17th century
Description

A late 17th-century English oak chest of drawers of attractive proportions and excellent original colour.

Arranged as three tiers of drawers: bold geometric pattern . Each drawer fitted with brass drop handles and matching keyhole escutcheons.

The chest has a deep, mellow original colour and rich surface patina. All timbers are original, including the solid top and the back boards, which remain in their honest, unrestored condition. It stands on its block feet with a base moulding. Smooth running drawers.

A lovely, unspoilt example of late 17th century oak furniture — full of character, with a warm, deep colour that has built up naturally over the centuries.

77cm wide x 53cm depth x 77cm high

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating during the Restoration period in England between 1660 and 1685, Charles II furniture is characterised by solid oak construction, geometric fielded mouldings, applied turnings, and brass teardrop drop handles.

Chests from this era were primarily constructed using English oak, assembled with mortise and tenon joints, featuring oak drawer linings and fitted with cast brass escutcheons and drop handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, side-hung drawer runners, hand-cut joinery, natural timber shrinkage, oxidisation in the grain, and deep geometric mitred mouldings.

Position the piece as a focal point against neutral walls and pair with minimalist contemporary artwork or subtle ceramics to create contrast between historic timber textures and clean modern lines.

Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight, dust regularly with a dry cloth, and apply a clear beeswax polish annually along the direction of the grain.
