Superb Quality Antique 17th Century Jacobean Oak Geometric Chest of Drawers

17th century
Description

A superb late 17th-century antique Jacobean oak chest of drawers fabulously crafted and full of period character. The chest features a striking geometric moulded front—a hallmark of Jacobean design—with two short drawers above two long drawers each fitted with original handles and escutcheons.

The drawers are oak-lined with early dovetail joinery and run smoothly within the carcass which stands on solid bracket feet. The top displays an exceptional patina, showing the deep, lustrous tones and natural wear that only centuries of use can produce.

This piece captures the bold architectural form typical of the late 17th century with its strong lines, geometric panels, and richly coloured timber. The fabulous dark oak colour and surface texture enhance its timeless appeal and authenticity.

A rare and genuine Jacobean period chest of drawers, circa 1680 — full of warmth, charm, and the unmistakable character of true English craftsmanship.

Jacobean furniture, originating in 17th-century England, is defined by sturdy oak construction, dark finishes, and prominent geometric mouldings. Pieces often feature applied architectural mouldings, split spindles, and heavy proportions reflective of the period.

Primary construction utilised English oak, often joined with peg mortise-and-tenon joints. Secondary woods included pine or poplar for drawer linings, complemented by hand-forged iron or brass drop-handle hardware.

Look for signs of hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetail or side-hung drawer runners, oak drawer bottoms with peg construction, and authentic age-related patina or oxidisation around original fixings.

Incorporate the chest as a focal point against neutral walls to highlight its dark patina and carved geometry. Pair with minimalist modern lighting, ceramic accents, or abstract artwork to create a compelling contrast.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice a year along the grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and humid environments to prevent wood movement and cracking.
