Stunning Antique Gebrüder Heubach Pâte-sur-pâte Twin-handled Porcelain Vase

19th century
Description

Gebrüder Heubach Pâte-sur-Pâte Floral Vase, circa 1890–1900

An elegant late-Victorian vase by Gebrüder Heubach of Lichte, Thuringia, Germany, featuring delicate pâte-sur-pâte floral decoration against a rich, satin-finish teal-blue ground.

The raised floral motif, apparently depicting narcissus, provides a beautiful contrast to the coloured body. Its graceful form and decorative treatment make it an attractive addition to a collection of late 19th-century art pottery or Art Nouveau ceramics.

The base bears the Heubach factory mark.

This late-Victorian art pottery vase originates from the Gebrüder Heubach factory in Germany, dating to around 1890. Modelled in porcelain from the Art Nouveau period, the piece takes a tapered profile with a square base, a cream-coloured interior, and high-set twin loop handles extending from the rim to the shoulder. A rich satin-finish teal blue glaze covers the exterior, decorated with white pâte-sur-pâte floral relief motifs resembling narcissus blooms and green foliage. The visible details include gilded rim detailing, a narrow neck, and moulded handles. Measuring 20.5 cm high and 10 cm wide, the vase sits suitably on a sideboard top to display cut stems or stand as a decorative focal point in a living room, hallway, or dining space. The design complements period and traditional interiors, bringing late 19th-century ceramic art into contemporary homes.

Pate-sur-pate, which translates from French as paste-on-paste, is a ceramic embellishment method where layers of translucent white liquid clay slip are built up on an unglazed coloured porcelain surface to create a low-relief design prior to final glazing and firing.

Art Nouveau porcelain vases were crafted using high-fired hard-paste porcelain, liquid clay slips for slip-casting or relief modelling, mineral pigment glazes for vivid colours, and occasional gilded accents along rims and handles.

Authentic Gebruder Heubach porcelain items typically feature impressed or stamped factory marks on the underside, such as a sunburst or initials, along with clean mould seam work and fine hand-applied slip decoration typical of late 19th and early 20th-century German manufacturing.

A vibrant porcelain vase works best placed as a focal point on a neutral surface, such as a marble mantelpiece or dark wood sideboard, allowing the colour and botanical motif to stand out without competing with surrounding decor.

Dust pate-sur-pate porcelain regularly with a soft, dry camel-hair brush. If deeper cleaning is needed, wipe gently using warm water and a mild non-abrasive soap, avoiding prolonged submersion or harsh chemicals that could degrade gilding or surface details.
