This Chinese Qing style cloisonne enamel vase dates from the early twentieth century and follows a baluster form with a flared neck and a gilt brass rim. The surface presents a light blue key fret ground embellished with raised decoration depicting colourful scholars objects, floral vessels, and delicate blossoms. A contrasting band of blue, white, and red floral motifs encircles the upper rim, while small round appliques project from the neck and body sides. Measuring 31 cm high, the vessel stands upright on a flat base finished with a metallic edge. Positioned on a sideboard top, the piece serves as an eye-catching decorative accent within a maximalist interior scheme. The enamel construction combines vibrant shades of turquoise, pink, yellow, blue, and green against the pale blue background, creating a textured visual effect. The substantial metal rims and raised ornamental elements provide a tangible relief across the cylindrical body, highlighting traditional metalwork techniques. Placed individually or paired with other oriental decorative items, it brings rich colour and historical pattern to living areas or display spaces.

Cloisonne is a metalworking technique where thin metallic wires are bent and soldered onto a brass or copper body to form compartments, known as cloisons. These compartments are filled with vitreous enamel paste, fired in a kiln, and then ground flat and polished to create a decorated surface.

Traditional Chinese cloisonne vases are constructed on a base of hammered copper or cast brass. Strips of copper wire form the design outlines, which are filled with ground glass enamel pastes coloured with mineral oxides before being finished with gold or mercury gilding on exposed metal sections.

Authentic period pieces often feature heavy hand-hammered metal bases, subtle surface pitting or tiny air bubbles in the enamel glaze, and hand-bent wirework with slight irregularities. Wear to the gilding on the exposed brass or copper rim and foot rim also indicates historic age.

Cloisonne vessels are frequently used as standalone focal accents on mantelpieces, consoles, or bookshelves to add colour and pattern. They contrast effectively against modern minimalist backboards, dark wood furniture, or neutral plaster walls.

Dust cloisonne surfaces gently using a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth or a natural bristle brush. Avoid immersing the piece in water, using chemical cleaners, or employing abrasive polishes, as these can strip remaining gilding or seep into minute cracks in the enamel structure.
