Antique Georgian Mahogany Bookcase | Serpentine with Astragal Glazing

18th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 18th century Georgian bookcase in mahogany, a handsome and elegant piece of excellent quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and graceful proportions.

The upper section features a pair of glazed doors with finely moulded astragal glazing bars in an interlaced Gothic arch pattern, opening to reveal adjustable shelves. The lower section is enclosed by a pair of serpentine panel doors, opening to a cupboard fitted with adjustable shelves set on ratchet supports. Both pairs of doors have brass escutcheons and locks.

The whole front follows a serpentine shape, from the moulded cornice down to the base, which has a shaped apron and stands on elegant splayed bracket feet. The doors are crossbanded, and the back retains its old boarded panels with an original red wash.

The mahogany displays a stunning figured grain and a warm, rich colour, with a beautiful patina that can only come with age.

It comes apart in two sections for ease of transport and positioning, and is presented in good condition. A very desirable Georgian serpentine bookcase, the perfect addition to any living room, study or library.

Georgian furniture is defined by symmetry, classical proportions, and the extensive use of high-quality hardwoods, particularly mahogany. The period spanned from 1714 to 1830 and incorporated architectural influences, intricate glazing patterns, and refined wood carving techniques.

Georgian bookcases were primarily constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers laid over oak or pine carcases. The upper sections utilised blown glass held by timber astragal glazing bars, complemented by brass door handles and escutcheons.

Authentic Georgian astragal glazing features hand-cut timber mouldings securing individual panes of crown glass, which often contain minor inclusions or subtle surface ripples. The interior wooden glazing bars will show hand-planing marks and original putty settings.

A Georgian bookcase functions as a focal point when placed against neutral walls in living rooms, dining spaces, or home offices. Combining modern art or minimal ceramics with books inside the glazed cabinet creates a balanced contrast between historical and contemporary elements.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish bleaching.
