Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large mahogany breakfront bookcase from 1900 stands 234.5 cm high, 229 cm wide, and 55 cm deep. The dark brown timber construction separates into two pieces, featuring a dentil cornice with thumbnail carvings, a fluted frieze, and carved ram heads beside the upper doors. The top section contains three astragal glazed doors with working locks and keys enclosing three height adjustable shelves per section. The breakfront base incorporates four doors fitted with working locks and keys, displaying oval and square flame mahogany veneer panels, and stands on short square tapering legs with fluted detail. Inside each lower cupboard is a single shelf. In a modern interior, this imposing piece provides substantial storage and display capacity for a grand dining room, library, or drawing room. The glazed upper compartments house collections of books or fine tableware, while the enclosed lower cupboards conceal larger household items. The traditional Regency style elements and rich mahogany grain complement period properties and formal architectural settings, adding architectural presence and formal organisation to a large living space.

FAQs

A breakfront bookcase features a central section that projects forward beyond the flanking side sections. Originating in the 18th century, this design allowed for increased depth and visual distinction in library and dining room settings.

Traditional breakfront bookcases were typically crafted from solid timbers such as mahogany or oak, featuring flame mahogany veneers, astragal glazed glass doors, and hand-cut dovetail joinery in the drawer and frame construction.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit hand-planed backboards, original crown glass with subtle surface variations, hand-carved astragal moulding, and period-correct brass hardware or lock mechanisms.

A large breakfront bookcase can serve as a focal point in a formal dining room, hallway, or home office, styled with curated collections of hardback books, ceramic vessels, and framed artwork alongside traditional volumes.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood finish.
