Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Early 19th-century library bookcases, produced during the late Georgian and Regency eras, are characterized by substantial scale and dual-section construction. They feature glazed upper doors with geometric glazing bars for book display set above a deeper, solid panelled cupboard base designed for secondary storage.

These bookcases were predominantly built from dense mahogany, utilizing hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed timber backboards, and individual glass panes held in place with delicate wooden astragal moulding.

Authentic period pieces show indications of age such as slight irregularities in the hand-blown glass panes, natural shrinkage lines in the timber panels, original lock mechanisms, and evidence of hand tools on unseen structural surfaces.

A tall mahogany bookcase can serve as an architectural anchor in a dining room, study, or hallway. Curating the shelves with a mixture of bound volumes, modern ceramic vessels, and minimalist art helps balance the visual weight of the dark polished wood.

Clean the glass panes using a soft microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water, avoiding ammonia-based spray cleaners near the wooden trim. Polish the mahogany frame once or twice per year with a beeswax polish to feed the timber and protect the original surface patination.
