The Hille furniture company was started in the East End of London in 1906 by Salamon Hille, a Russian emigrant, to renovate and reproduce eighteenth century furniture. The focus of the business was very much quality rather than large volumes, employing skilled craftsmen and gaining customers such as Hamptons, a well known furniture store, amongst others. By the 1930’s the company had established an international reputation supplying products all over the world. Salamon's daughter, Ray, subsequently joined and worked with the company to produce furniture to original designs. In 1932, Salamon retired and Ray took over the reigns of the business with Hille becoming a Limited company that year under her leadership.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale style refers to 18th-century English furniture designs popularised by Thomas Chippendale, characterised by intricate carving, cabriole legs, claw and ball feet, and architectural proportions.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, featuring hand-cut glass panes set in astragal glazing bars and detailed timber veneers.

Key indicators include carved motif details such as acanthus leaves or scrolls, decorative astragal glazing patterns on cabinet doors, and ball-and-claw foot terminations.

Place the bookcase in a dedicated study, hallway, or dining space to create a structural focal point, pairing it with tailored seating or neutral wall tones to balance the dark timber.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply beeswax polish occasionally along the wood grain, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources or damp environments.
