This Staffordshire pottery spill vase from the Victorian period originates from the Thomas Parr factory around 1860. The earthenware piece takes the form of a white pointer hound with liver-coloured spots, standing before a tree stump on a grassy mound. Polychrome enamelling details the dog and the naturalistic base, which features shredded clay foliage in blue and green, brown and green landscape washes, and a single gilt line along the lower edge. The interior of the tree trunk vase is glazed in bright orange. Measuring 16.2 cm high, 13 cm wide and 5.5 cm depth, the figure serves as a decorative mantelpiece ornament in an English country house interior.

A Staffordshire spill vase is a nineteenth-century earthenware vessel designed to hold rolled paper spills or thin wood splints used for transferring fire from a hearth to candles or lamps. These objects were manufactured in the Staffordshire Potteries region and often featured decorative figures of animals, historical personages, or rural scenes alongside the hollow vessel.

Staffordshire pottery figures were constructed from press-moulded earthenware clay, assembled in sections, and fired. Decoration was applied using underglaze press colours or overglaze polychrome enamel paints, often finished with a clear lead glaze and occasional gilding.

Authentic nineteenth-century Staffordshire pottery generally displays a flat or hollow unglazed base with a small release hole used during firing. Genuine pieces exhibit age-appropriate craze lines in the lead glaze, hand-painted polychrome detailing with slight irregularities, and a lighter weight compared to modern reproductions.

A Staffordshire figure can be styled as an accent piece on a fireplace mantelpiece, open bookshelf, or side table to add historical interest. Displaying ceramic figures alongside modern artwork or structured tabletop items creates contrast within traditional or eclectic interior schemes.

Clean Staffordshire pottery using a soft dry brush or a slightly dampened cloth with plain water to remove dust. Avoid immersing the piece in water, using harsh chemical detergents, or applying abrasive cloths, as moisture can enter glaze crazing and damage overglaze enamel paint or gilding.
