This 1880 scent bottle takes a flattened oval form measuring 6.5 cm high, 3.3 cm wide, and 1.4 cm deep. The body displays a mottled tortoiseshell effect in brown and white, paired with an embossed silver screw top cap and hand-painted enamel panels on the front and back depicting a bird and reeds. The silver cap features raised geometric patterns and a central domed finial, while the glass body has a smooth glossy glaze and the painted enamel panel includes delicate black and green linework. Originating in England during the Victorian period within the Aesthetic Movement style, the item serves as a small collector's piece. It fits well on a mantelpiece or dressing table for display, and the screw top remains usable today for personal fragrance.

Scent bottles grew in popularity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as essential accessories for holding liquid perfumes and smelling salts. During the Victorian era and the Aesthetic Movement, craftsmen combined precious metals like sterling silver with vitreous enamel decoration, often depicting botanical or avian subjects influenced by Japanese art.

Victorian scent bottles were made from a range of high-grade materials including blown glass, cut crystal, shell, and porcelain. Mounts were commonly crafted in sterling or coin silver, often paired with hand-applied vitreous enamels and gilded accents.

Authentic pieces typically feature silver hallmarks or maker marks stamped along the collar, cap, or rim. Hand-painted enamel displays subtle variations in brushwork and depth, while genuine period metalwork exhibits natural signs of surface oxidation and historical wear.

Small vanity items function well as decorative accents arranged on a mirrored tray atop a dressing table or vanity unit. They can also be integrated into a curio cabinet display or placed alongside books on a shelf to add historic texture.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid submerging the bottle in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, which can damage enamel panels or alter shell components; polish silver fittings carefully using a specialized silver cloth.
