This Victorian sterling silver mounted crackle glass scent bottle dates from 1898, manufactured in Birmingham by Charles May. The globular body displays a crackle glass texture in white and acid yellow, paired with an understated, hinged silver cap and a dome-shaped finial showing a small dimple. The polished silver collar bears clear hallmarks, while the interior retains its original peg stopper. Measuring 8.3 cm high and 7 cm wide, the piece sits neatly on a bedside table as a decorative collector's item or a dressing table accessory. Placed in a modern bedroom or dressing room, this cologne bottle brings historic character to a display surface while remaining suitable for everyday storage use.

During the Victorian era, personal fragrance accessories became highly popular vanity items for affluent individuals. Silversmiths frequently collaborated with glassmakers to craft decorative bottles fitted with hallmarked silver collars and hinged caps.

Crackle glass was created by immersing hot blown glass into cold water briefly during production. The sudden thermal shock caused the outer layer to crackle, after which the glass was reheated and finished to lock the textured pattern within the surface.

Authentic pieces usually feature British silver hallmarks stamped into the metal collar or cap, indicating the maker, assay office, and date letter. Additionally, period glass shows signs of hand-finishing, such as polished pontil marks or slight variations in weight.

Place the bottle alongside contemporary glass containers or polished metal trays on a vanity or bedside table. Grouping small decorative objects creates a subtle textural vignette while incorporating historical character.

Dust the glass body softly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid submerging crackle glass in water to prevent moisture ingress between internal fractures. Lightly polish the silver mounts using a specialised silver polishing cloth without applying harsh chemical pastes.
