Antique Japanese Kutani Long-Neck Bottle Vase – Meiji Period, c.1880–1900

A charming late 19th-century Japanese Kutani porcelain bottle vase dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912), circa 1880–1900.

Finely potted on a small scale, the vase has an elegant globular body rising to an unusually long, slender cylindrical neck. It measures approximately 16 cm high × 9 cm at its widest point and weighs 161.3 grams.

The vase is richly hand decorated in the characteristic Kutani palette, principally iron red, russet-brown enamels and gilt. The rounded body is divided into flowing shaped reserves containing finely painted flowering plants and foliage, including chrysanthemums and other floral sprays.

These reserves are framed by elaborate iron-red panels enriched with dense gilt scrollwork and stylised ornament. The tall neck continues the iron-red ground and carries freely painted gilt scrolling motifs, with further geometric and gilt decoration around the shoulder and lower body.

The cream-coloured glazed areas exhibit an extensive fine crackle/crazing pattern, giving the surface considerable antique character. There is attractive age-related wear to portions of the gilding.

The underside bears the hand-painted iron-red 九谷製 (Kutani sei) mark, translating as “Made in Kutani.”

A particularly decorative small example of Japanese Kutani ware from the Meiji period, combining the distinctive iron-red and gilt palette for which late 19th-century Kutani became internationally recognised.

Condition: The vase displays attractively but has a significant old crack/hairline running around part of the lower neck, together with further cracking at and immediately above the neck-to-shoulder junction. There is associated age-related wear, rubbing to the gilding and overall crazing. Please refer closely to the photographs, which form an important part of the condition description. The damage has been taken fully into account in the asking price.
