Georgian Multi Spiral Air Twist Wine Glass, Waisted Bucket Bowl

Description

This is a Georgian, English, multi spiral air twist wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a waisted bucket-shaped bowl measuring 5.7 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a multi spiral air twist stem. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 6.6 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter. The glass is 15.4 cm (6.1 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There are a couple of dealer's or collector's stickers to the underside of the foot.

English lead glass weighing in at 125 g. (~ 4 1/2 oz.).

Air twist wine glasses are a style of English stemware developed around the 1740s, characterised by decorative internal spiral patterns formed by drawing out trapped air bubbles inside molten glass stems during manufacturing.

These glasses were hand-blown using heavy lead glass, also known as flint glass. Artisans created internal air channels by making pricks or indentations in the molten glass gather, which were then stretched and twisted as the stem was drawn.

Authentic period examples generally display a snapped or ground pontil mark on the underside of the foot, slight asymmetry from hand-blowing, natural wear marks on the bottom rim, and a heavier feel characteristic of historical lead glass formulas.
