Antique English Novelty Silver Plated Biscuit Box / Ice Bucket C.1900

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A handsome and unusual Edwardian biscuit box created in the form of traditional coopered barrel.

The hinged lid works well and fits well and it topped with a shaped finial and there is a folding swing handle.

Dating to c.1900, Edwardian in era, it remains in excellent antique condition. The base diameter measures 5 1/2", the lid diameter measures 4"; 6" tall to top of lid finial or 8 3/4" to top of handle while upright. Unmarked, surprisingly given the good quality.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Threaded cross-nut securing the lid finial: metalwork before modern stamped fixings.
Applied barrel hoops and engraved staves: popular late Victorian and Edwardian novelty tableware.
Natural age darkening across the interior: consistent with prolonged period domestic use.
Integral cast hinge and swing handle mounts: early machine-age electroplate manufacture.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian biscuit box or ice bucket from around 1900 takes the form of a traditional coopered wooden barrel rendered in silver plate with a bright, reflective silver colour. The cylindrical body displays incised vertical stave lines and horizontal raised band mouldings, while a flat hinged lid sits atop the container featuring a central shaped finial and a tall upright curved swing handle mounted on pivoting side brackets. The vessel stands on a plain circular base. Practical for everyday use, this piece measures 15.2 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. It functions as a decorative storage container for a gentleman's library, study, or living room, and sits suitably on a sideboard top, desk, or drinks cabinet to hold biscuits or ice.

FAQs

Popularised in late Victorian and Edwardian England, novelty silver plated biscuit barrels were decorative table containers crafted in playful shapes, such as barrels or buckets, used to serve biscuits or hold ice.

These pieces were typically manufactured from a base metal alloy, such as electroplated nickel silver, engraved or pressed with decorative staves, and fitted with swing handles and fitted lids.

Authentic pieces usually feature manufacturer makers marks or electroplate stamps near the rim or base, displaying minor wear to the plating consistent with period manufacturing techniques.

Position the container on a dining room sideboard, home bar cart, or drinks tray to function as an ice bucket or decorative table centrepiece.

Clean gently using a soft cotton cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh abrasive chemicals or dipping solutions that could erode the silver layer.
