This Victorian silver-plated biscuit or trinket box dates from 1890 and presents an oval shape with a silver colour throughout. The piece consists of a domed lid decorated with floral engraving and a dog finial, a pierced oval and floral engraved body enclosing a silver-plated lining, and a pierced base featuring a beaded border. Four cast shell motif feet support the assembly, which bears a diamond registration mark. The main body measures 17.8 cm wide by 12.7 cm deep, while the base measures 22.8 cm wide by 17.8 cm deep, with a total weight of 52 Troy Oz. Suitable for an English Country House aesthetic, the biscuit box sits comfortably upon a sideboard top in a dining room, living room, or study. It serves as a practical container for dry biscuits or small trinkets, bringing period character to surface displays without requiring specialized care beyond general silver maintenance.

Silver-plated biscuit boxes originated in 19th-century Britain to serve sweet biscuits alongside tea. As biscuit production expanded during the Industrial Revolution, decorative containers became central items on Victorian dining tables and sideboards.

These items were predominantly constructed using Electroplated Nickel Silver (EPNS) or electroplated copper. Makers utilized fretwork piercing, hand-chasing, engine turning, and casting techniques for finials and decorative feet.

Authentic period pieces feature standard maker marks, such as EPNS or specific manufacturer trade symbols, alongside period design motifs like beaded rims and cast animal finials. Moderate wear exposing base metal at prominent edges is also characteristic.

A Victorian silver-plated box functions as a tabletop accent on a sideboard, console, or vanity table. It serves effectively as a container for jewellery or small desk accoutrements while providing historical contrast in contemporary settings.

Clean silver plate using a soft cotton cloth and specialized, non-abrasive silver polish to prevent removing the thin electroplated silver layer. Avoid harsh chemicals, liquid immersion, or abrasive sponges.
