Late Victorian Stripped Pitch Pine Glazed Cupboard

Description

A fine late Victorian stripped pitch-pine glazed cupboard. The lower section is enclosed behind twin arched panelled doors with a matching central stile, below two bold drawers. The upper section mirrors the lower, with the arched panels replaced by glazed doors.

The interior retains its original turquoise paint, which would once have adorned the whole unit and now provides a striking contrast to the stripped pitch pine.

Fine Victorian pitch pine throughout, with brass handles and pulls, applied dart mouldings to the top and a bold cornice, all standing on a bracketed plinth base.

Well proportioned and well executed throughout.

Condition Report

In excellent antique condition. The side panels, back and plinth all show signs of historic woodworm. I would suggest this was resolved when the piece was stripped, and the lower section has consequently had its back replaced, probably for this reason.

The upper section retains its key and both locks work. The lower section uses the same type of lock and the key fits, but the lock mechanisms have lost their springs and therefore do not work reliably.
