This French Art Nouveau music cabinet dates from the Victorian period, around 1900. Built from walnut and mahogany with brass hardware, the piece presents a warm brown timber colour with rich figured veneer patterns across the double doors. The structure includes whiplash carved organic door details, a pierced gallery top with a decorative central cresting motif, and slender cabriole legs. Measuring 116 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 39 cm deep, the cabinet provides compact vertical storage for sheet music or small household items. Positioned in an empty corner or beside a living room armchair, the cabinet brings period French Chateau charm to a contemporary home interior while functioning as an accent table or small storage unit. One of the internal drawers is a later replacement, though this adjustment remains hardly noticeable during everyday use. The overall construction maintains a very good condition, offering an elegant yet sturdy piece suitable for daily decorative and practical display in domestic settings.

FAQs

Music cabinets produced during the Art Nouveau period, between 1890 and 1910, were specialized storage pieces designed to house sheet music, characterized by organic lines, naturalistic carving, and decorative woodwork.

These cabinets were typically crafted from fine hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany, often featuring figured wood veneers, hand-carved whiplash motifs, dovetail joinery, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic examples feature characteristic asymmetrical or sinuous organic carving, original interior shelf divisions fitted for paper sheets, period-correct hardware, and natural signs of age on the timber and finish.

A music cabinet functions effectively as a hallway accent piece, a bedside storage unit, or an occasional side cabinet in a living space to store documents, books, or vinyl records.

Maintain the surface finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, applying a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally along the grain, and keeping the cabinet away from direct heat sources or high humidity.
