Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th-century Georgian vernacular coffer is fashioned from solid elm in a warm honey brown colour with prominent wood grain. The piece demonstrates a rustic farmhouse design with a plank construction, a rectangular hinged lid, an old patched repair to the top, and historic woodworm holes visible across the surfaces. Further details include a central iron lockplate, original hinges, and slab-shaped bootjack ends that serve as feet. The dimensions measure 56 cm high, 119 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this storage chest works well placed against a hallway wall or at the foot of a bed to hold blankets and linens. The sturdy timber surface also functions effectively as a low display table or a convenient drop-off spot in an entryway.

FAQs

An 18th-century elm coffer is a utilitarian wooden storage trunk constructed primarily from British elm plank timber. Characterised by a lift-up hinged lid, these chests were standard fixtures in rural English households for storing linens, clothing, and household goods.

Coffers from this period were crafted using solid native hardwoods, such as elm or oak, often joined with hand-cut dovetails or iron rosehead nails. Hardware typically includes hand-forged iron escutcheons, strap hinges, and simple latch mechanisms.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-planed timber, irregular thickness in the planks, and natural shrinkage line separations along the grain. The presence of hand-forged ironwork, authentic surface oxidisation, and original bootjack ends further confirms period construction.

An antique coffer serves as a functional focal point, operating effectively as a low coffee table, a hallway bench, or storage at the foot of a bed. Its rich wood tones provide visual texture and warmth within neutral or contemporary schemes.

Maintain the timber by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to prevent drying and nourish the wood. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent shrinking or warping of the solid planks.
